Chemistry, Grade 12

This course enables students to deepen their understanding of chemistry through the study of organic chemistry, the structure and properties of matter, energy changes and rates of reaction, equilibrium in chemical systems, and electrochemistry. Students will further develop their problem-solving and investigation skills as they investigate chemical processes and will refine their ability to communicate scientific information. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of chemistry in everyday life and on evaluating the impact of chemical technology on the environment.

Prerequisite: Chemistry, Grade 11, University Preparation

Course Outline

Module 1 Overview: Organic Chemistry

Guiding Question:
What are the impacts that organic compounds have in everyday life?  How does knowing the structure, properties and chemical behavior of compounds help us reduce the negative impact of organic compounds?

Organic Chemistry is the study of carbon-containing compounds and their properties. Organic Compounds have predictable chemical and physical properties determined by their respective structures. Organic chemical reactions and their applications have significant implications for society, human health, and the environment.

Module 2 Overview: Structures and Property of Matter

Guiding Question:
What is the impact of products/technologies related to the structure and properties of matter? How are atomic structure and chemical bonding related to the physical properties of substances?

The nature of attractive forces that exist between particles in a substance determines the properties of that substance. Technological devices that are based on the principles of atomic and molecular structures have societal benefits and costs. This module goes into the inside world of an atom, how it is, its bonding behavior and its application.

Module 3 Overview: Energy Changes and Rates of Reaction

Guiding Question:
What is the impact of products/technologies related to the structure and properties of matter? How are atomic structure and chemical bonding related to the physical properties of substances?

The nature of attractive forces that exist between particles in a substance determines the properties of that substance. Technological devices that are based on the principles of atomic and molecular structures have societal benefits and costs. This module goes into the inside world of an atom, how it is, its bonding behavior and its application.

Module 4 Overview: Chemical Systems and Equilibrium

Guiding Question:
How do chemical equilibrium processes impact our lives and what are the variables that cause shifts in the equilibrium of chemical systems?

Equilibrium is very important for chemical systems in this world. Applications of chemical systems at equilibrium have been used in industry and are found in all living organisms.

Module 5 Overview: Electrochemistry

Guiding Question:
What are the impacts of electrochemistry on society, health, and the environment? What is the science behind the electrochemical reactions that are used in everyday life?

Electrochemistry is the branch of science that deals with the connection between electricity and chemical changes. This module will explore then principles of redox reactions and the practical applications and impact of electrochemistry.
