Course Outline
Students will explore quadratic relations and their applications; solve and apply linear systems; verify properties of geometric figures using analytic geometry; and investigate the trigonometry of right and acute triangles. Students will reason mathematically and communicate their thinking as they solve multi-step problems.
Prerequsite:Principles of Mathematics, Grade 9, Academic
Module 1 Overview: Quadratic Expressions
Guiding Question:What is the purpose of factoring an expression and how is it related to multiplying out?
In this module, you will explore multiplying and factoring polynomials. You will use these concepts to solve quadratic equations and understand learn how to determine the number of solutions for a quadratic equation.
Module 2 Overview: Quadratic Relations
Guiding Question:What is a quadratic relation and how can you tell whether a relation is quadratic or not?
In this module, you will explore quadratic relations using the knowledge and understanding of the concepts in Module 1. You will learn how to sketch quadratic relations and how to use quadratic relations to solve real world problems.
Module 3 Overview: Analytic Geometry
Guiding Question:If two linear graphs intersect, what can we say about the point of intersection?
In this module, you will learn about the linear systems and how to find solutions to those systems. You will learn how to solve linear systems by graphing (sketching), the substitution method and the elimination method. You will apply your knowledge to real world problems.
Module 4 Overview: Trigonometry
Guiding Question:What methods can we use to find missing side lengths of triangles?
In this module, you will learn about how to determine whether triangles are similar. You will also use trig ratios (sin, cos and tan) to solve problems in right triangles and use the sin and cos law to solve problems involving acute triangles.
