The Future Skills Center suggests that there is a serious shortage of skilled trades people in Canada. Quoting the Conference Board of Canada, they claim that skills-related job vacancies were costing the Canadian economy as much as $25 billion in 2020 – about 1.3% of its GDP. In order to help address this deficit, the Ontario Ministry of Education is modernizing its curriculum to help prepare students for the jobs of tomorrow. Staring in the 2024/2025 school year, compulsory grade 9 and 10 courses will be introduced to allow students to explore job skills as well as education and training pathways that can lead to a variety of careers.
The new high school courses will cover a wide range of technology and skilled trades, such as Communications, Computers, Construction, Green Industries, Hair-styling and Aesthetics, Health Care, Hospitality and Tourism, Manufacturing. Technological Design and Transportation. The aim of these courses is better align student education to the demands of today’s job marketplace to help create a foundation for future student success.
