Chemistry, Grade 11

This course enables students to deepen their understanding of chemistry through the study of the properties of chemicals and chemical bonds; chemical reactions and quantitative relationships in those reactions; solutions and solubility; and atmospheric chemistry and the behaviour of gases. Students will further develop their analytical skills and investigate the qualitative and quantitative properties of matter, as well as the impact of some common chemical reactions on society and the environment.

Prerequisite: Science, Grade 10 Academic

Course Outline

Module 1 Overview: Matter, Chemical Trends and Chemical Bonding

Guiding Question:
Why is it important to use chemicals properly? How does chemical bonding determine the properties of a compound?

In this module, you will learn about the physical properties, chemical properties, naming of elements and compounds as well as use various methods to visually represent them. You will also explore further into the concepts of the atomic model and how subatomic particles impact the overall physical and chemical properties of each element. Every element has predictable chemical and physical properties determined by its structure. The type of chemical bond in a compound determines the physical and chemical properties of that compound. It is important to use chemicals properly to minimize the risks to human health and the environment.

Module 2 Overview: Chemical Reactions and Applications

Guiding Question:
How do chemical reactions affect us and the environment? How can we minimize the impact of chemical processes on the environment?

In this module, you will be learning about how different chemicals react in predictable ways and how they can be classified and studied based on these reactions. You will also be learning about chemical reactions and their applications. These reactions have significant implications for society and the environment.

Module 3 Overview: Quantities in Chemical Reactions

Guiding Question:
How can quantitative accuracy help improve the efficiency of processes at the workplace, society and the environment?

This module teaches you the importance of quantitative relationships in chemistry. It also teaches you how to improve efficiency in industries by maintaining quantitative accuracy.

Module 4 Overview: Solubility, Solutions and Acids & Bases

Guiding Question:
How does knowing the properties and reactions of solutions help in solving environmental issues concerning water?

In this module, you will be learning about the properties of solutions and the ways to describe their concentrations. It also focuses on how this scientific understanding can help solve environmental issues related to solutions.

Module 5 Overview: Gases and Atmospheric Chemistry

Guiding Question:
How does understanding the gas laws help predict the behaviour of gases? How does human activity impact air quality?

This module focuses on exploring the properties of gases and understanding the gas laws that govern these properties. It will also explain the impacts of human activities on air quality and the environmental initiatives to combat air pollution.
